Strikethrough Shortcut
To strike through text: in Google Docs press Alt+Shift+5 (Windows) or ⌘⇧X (Mac); in Excel press Ctrl+5 (Windows) or ⌘⇧X (Mac); in Slack press Ctrl+Shift+X (Windows) or ⌘⇧X (Mac). Here is the strikethrough shortcut in every major app, side by side.
| Action | Mac | Windows | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Docs | ⌘⇧X | Alt+Shift+5 | |
| Excel | ⌘⇧X | Ctrl+5 | |
| Slack | ⌘⇧X | Ctrl+Shift+X | |
| Word (ribbon) | — | Alt, H, 4 |
Strikethrough across apps
Most apps put strikethrough on ⌘⇧X on a Mac. On Windows it splits: Google Docs uses Alt+Shift+5, Excel uses Ctrl+5, and Slack uses Ctrl+Shift+X.
Word has no default key
Microsoft Word ships without a one-key strikethrough. On Windows use the ribbon: press Alt, then H, then 4. You can also open the Font dialog (Ctrl+D on Windows, ⌘D on Mac) and tick Strikethrough, or assign your own shortcut in File › Options › Customize Ribbon › Keyboard shortcuts.
Chat apps use markdown
In Slack, Discord and WhatsApp you can also wrap text in tildes: ~like this~ renders as strikethrough.
