Address Bar Shortcut (Ctrl+L / ⌘L)
Jump to the browser address bar: ⌘L on Mac, Ctrl+L on Windows. It selects the current URL so you can type over it.
| Action | Mac | Windows | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus the address bar | ⌘L | Ctrl+L | |
| Focus address bar (alt) | ⌘L | Alt+D or F6 | |
| Search from address bar | ⌘L then type | Ctrl+L then type | |
| Add www. and .com | (auto) | Ctrl+Enter | |
| Open result in new tab | ⌥Enter | Alt+Enter |
Straight to the URL
⌘L (Mac) or Ctrl+L (Windows) moves the cursor to the address bar and highlights the whole URL, so whatever you type replaces it. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. On Windows Alt+D and F6 do the same thing.
Search and shortcuts
The address bar is also the search box — type a query instead of a URL and press Enter. On Windows, Ctrl+Enter wraps what you typed in www. and .com; ⌥Enter / Alt+Enter opens the result in a new tab.
