Archive in Gmail (press E)
Clear a message from the inbox without deleting it: press E. The same key works on Mac and Windows once keyboard shortcuts are turned on in Gmail settings.
| Action | Mac | Windows | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive the conversation | E | E | |
| Mute (archive + skip future replies) | M | M | |
| Delete (move to Trash) | # | # | |
| Report spam | ! | ! | |
| Undo the last action | Z | Z |
Turn shortcuts on first
Gmail single-key shortcuts are off by default. Open Settings → See all settings → General → Keyboard shortcuts → On and save. Then opening or selecting a message and pressing E archives it instantly.
Archive vs. delete
Archiving keeps the mail — it just leaves the inbox and stays searchable in All Mail. Press Z straight after to undo if you archived the wrong thread.
