Delete File Shortcut (Delete / ⌘⌫)
Send a file to the trash/recycle bin: ⌘⌫ on Mac, Delete on Windows. Here it is with permanent delete and rename.
| Action | Mac | Windows | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete file (to Trash/Recycle Bin) | ⌘⌫ | Delete | |
| Delete permanently (skip bin) | ⌘⌥⌫ | Shift+Delete | |
| Rename file | Return | F2 | |
| Empty Trash / Recycle Bin | ⌘⇧⌫ | (right-click → Empty) |
Delete a file
Select the file and press ⌘⌫ on the Mac or Delete on Windows to move it to the Trash / Recycle Bin. On the Mac the plain Delete (Backspace) key does not delete a file — you need ⌘ with it.
Delete without the bin
To erase a file permanently, add Shift/Option: ⌘⌥⌫ on Mac or Shift+Delete on Windows. This skips the Trash, so it can't be undone.
