Open the emoji picker: Win+. (period) or Win+; on Windows, ⌃⌘Space (Control+Command+Space) on Mac.

Emoji anywhere
On Windows 10/11 press Win+. (period) — or Win+; — in any text field to open the emoji panel, which also has GIFs, kaomoji and symbols. On the Mac press ⌃⌘Space (Control+Command+Space) to open the Character Viewer with emoji.
Picking and inserting
Type to search (for example "heart" or "fire"), use the arrow keys to move, and press Enter / Return to insert. The panel stays open so you can add several emoji in a row.
