Justify Text Shortcut (Ctrl+J / ⌘J)
Justify a paragraph with ⌘J on Mac or Ctrl+J on Windows. Here it is with the rest of the alignment row.
| Action | Mac | Windows | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Justify | ⌘J | Ctrl+J | |
| Align left | ⌘L | Ctrl+L | |
| Align center | ⌘E | Ctrl+E | |
| Align right | ⌘R | Ctrl+R |
Justifying text
Press ⌘J (Mac) or Ctrl+J (Windows) to justify the current paragraph — straight edges on both sides. Works in Word, Google Docs and Outlook.
The alignment row
One letter each: Ctrl+L left, Ctrl+E center, Ctrl+R right, Ctrl+J justify — use ⌘ instead of Ctrl on the Mac.
Justify in Word vs Google Docs
In Microsoft Word the justify shortcut is Ctrl+J (Windows) or ⌘J (Mac). Google Docs uses Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows and ⌘⇧J on the Mac. Both stretch each line so the left and right edges line up flush.
Remove justification
To undo justified text, select it and apply left alignment instead: Ctrl+L / ⌘L. Justify and align-left are mutually exclusive, so switching to left alignment clears the justify formatting.
Ctrl+J opened Downloads instead — why
Ctrl+J only justifies text when the cursor is inside a document editor (Word, Google Docs, Outlook). If you press it while focus is on the browser page itself, Chrome, Edge and Firefox treat Ctrl+J as Open Downloads. Click into the text box first, then press Ctrl+J — or in Google Docs use Ctrl+Shift+J (⌘⇧J), which never collides with the browser.
Justify by app
| App | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Word | Ctrl+J | ⌘J |
| Google Docs | Ctrl+Shift+J | ⌘⇧J |
| Outlook (email body) | Ctrl+J | ⌘J |
| Apple Pages | — | ⌘⌥J |
| PowerPoint | Ctrl+J | ⌘J |
Fixing ugly gaps in justified text
Justify stretches the spaces on every line so both edges are flush, which can leave big white gaps ("rivers") in narrow columns. Turn on hyphenation to break long words across lines and tighten the spacing: in Word use Layout → Hyphenation → Automatic; in Google Docs there is no hyphenation, so widen the column or switch that paragraph back to left alignment with Ctrl+L / ⌘L.
Justify vs justify-last-line
Standard justify leaves the final line of a paragraph left-aligned. "Force justify" (also called justify-all) stretches the last line too — useful for a single display line but wrong for body text. Word only offers normal justify via Ctrl+J; force-justify is a paragraph setting, not a shortcut.
FAQ
What is the justify shortcut?
Press ⌘J on the Mac or Ctrl+J on Windows to justify the current paragraph.
Does Ctrl+J work in Word and Google Docs?
Yes — Ctrl+J (⌘J) justifies the paragraph in Word, Google Docs and Outlook. In browsers Ctrl+J opens Downloads instead.
What are the other alignment shortcuts?
Left is Ctrl+L / ⌘L, center is Ctrl+E / ⌘E and right is Ctrl+R / ⌘R.
What is the justify shortcut in Google Docs?
Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows or ⌘⇧J on the Mac. In Microsoft Word it is just Ctrl+J / ⌘J.
How do I remove justify alignment?
Select the text and apply left alignment with Ctrl+L (⌘L on Mac); that replaces the justified formatting.
What is the difference between justify and align?
Align left/right/center shifts text to one side or the middle; justify stretches each line so both the left and right edges are flush.
Why did Ctrl+J open my Downloads instead of justifying?
Focus was on the browser, not the text box. Chrome, Edge and Firefox map Ctrl+J to Open Downloads. Click into the editor first, or use Ctrl+Shift+J (⌘⇧J) in Google Docs.
How do I fix big gaps in justified text?
Turn on automatic hyphenation (Word: Layout → Hyphenation → Automatic) or widen the column. Google Docs has no hyphenation, so use left alignment if gaps look bad.
What is the justify shortcut in Apple Pages?
⌘⌥J (Command-Option-J) justifies the selected paragraph in Pages on the Mac.
