Windows: straight to Task Manager
Ctrl+Shift+Esc opens Task Manager directly — no menus. Use it to end a frozen app (Processes tab > End task), check what's using CPU or memory, or manage startup programs. Ctrl+Alt+Delete reaches it via the security screen, which works even when the desktop is unresponsive.
Mac: Force Quit and Activity Monitor
The Mac has no "Task Manager" by that name. ⌘⌥Esc opens the Force Quit window to kill a frozen app. For the detailed CPU/memory view, open Activity Monitor from Spotlight (⌘Space, then type it).
