Left Align Shortcut (Ctrl+L / ⌘L)
Left-align a paragraph with ⌘L on Mac or Ctrl+L on Windows. Here it is with the rest of the alignment row.
| Action | Mac | Windows | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Align left | ⌘L | Ctrl+L | |
| Align center | ⌘E | Ctrl+E | |
| Align right | ⌘R | Ctrl+R | |
| Justify | ⌘J | Ctrl+J | |
| Align left in Google Docs | ⌘⇧L | Ctrl+Shift+L | |
| Single line spacing (Word) | ⌘1 | Ctrl+1 | |
| 1.5 line spacing (Word) | ⌘5 | Ctrl+5 | |
| Double line spacing (Word) | ⌘2 | Ctrl+2 |
Left-aligning text
Press ⌘L (Mac) or Ctrl+L (Windows) to left-align the current paragraph — the default for most documents. Works in Word, Outlook and most word processors.
The alignment row
One letter each: Ctrl+L left, Ctrl+E center, Ctrl+R right, Ctrl+J justify — use ⌘ instead of Ctrl on the Mac.
Google Docs is different: add Shift
Google Docs does not use plain Ctrl+L. It adds Shift: Ctrl+Shift+L left, Ctrl+Shift+E center, Ctrl+Shift+R right, Ctrl+Shift+J justify (⌘⇧ on the Mac). That is the single most common reason the alignment shortcut "does nothing" — you are in Docs, not Word.
Ctrl+L opened the address bar instead?
If Ctrl+L / ⌘L jumped your cursor to the browser URL bar, that is expected: in Chrome, Edge and Firefox Ctrl+L focuses the address bar. Alignment shortcuts only work inside a document editor, so click into the document body first.
Line spacing from the keyboard
In Word you can set spacing without the ribbon: Ctrl+1 single, Ctrl+5 for 1.5, Ctrl+2 double (use ⌘ on the Mac). Combine with the alignment row to format a paragraph entirely by keyboard.
